Explain the origin of lipids in the vascular system of animals? [6]
Cholesterol and triglycerides constitute lipids
Food is the source of triglycerides in the body, it can also be obtained from adipocytes
Triglycerides are absorbed by the intestines and after absorption, the pancreatic lipase enzyme and bile salts break down the triglycerides into monoglycerides. These monoglycerides again form triglycerides after crossing the intestinal membrane
Triglycerides and cholesterol molecules combine to form chylomicrons, which are phospholipid vesicles that allow the molecule to transport through the body. They enter the lymphatic system and from there they reach the circulatory system and become available to be used to generate energy or to be stored in adipocytes
