5) As you likely know, we are in the largest extinction event since the Cretaceous-Tertiary (K-T) mass extinction of 66 million years ago, in which 75% of all plant and animal species were eliminated. It is widely thought that the K-T mass extinction was associated with a ca. 10 km diameter meteor strike in the Gulf of Mexico near what is now the Yucatan peninsula. The on-going mass extinction event (the Holocene or (and this is my preferred term) Anthropocene Extinction) is caused by human activity (of many kinds) and is estimated to ultimately result in the loss of 30-50% of all animal and plant species (from what I know, I think this is an optimistic estimate). What risk, if any, does this mass extinction event pose to humans and why or why not?
