Motivation refers to the way which can change the behavior of individual. Motivation makes the employees to exhibit acceptable behavior and attitude at workplace. Motivation can be monetary or non-monetary.

Motivation makes the people to act in a way to achieve the goal efficiently and effectively. People can be motivated by the leader. A good motivator is the one who is responsible for bringing change in attitude and behavior of individuals. Negative motivation technique focus on the consequences as a result of under-performance. For example fear is a negative motivator that is used to make the employees feel how under-performance can lead to termination. Positive motivation refers to the technique by which the behavior and performance of the employees are influenced. Example- rewards are positive motivator.

Motivation helps in fulfilling the goal. It consists of achievement drive, commitment, initiative and optimism. It is very important for the managers to come up with different strategies to motivate an employee. These include: -

  • Rewards and recognitions
  • Positive and friendly working environment
  • Increasing employee engagement
  • Providing training and development programs to enhance their skills
  • Act fairly and create an environment of trust
  • Implementing incentives program

Job enrichment and job enlargement are another important strategies to motivate the employees by providing them effective training to enhance their skills and providing them with extra responsibilities. The best way to motivate employees is job enrichment. This process helps in enhancing the skills of the employees so that they can give highest level of performance and focus on their career development. It not only enhance the skills of the employees but also benefit the organization by improving the quality of work.

The reason job enrichment is important are:-

  • It helps in addressing the weaknesses and strengthen the skills and knowledge of employees. Job enrichment one of the important part of training and development.
  • If the organization provides effective training to employees, they will perform better at workplace. Effective training will provide them with confidence and make them improve the quality of their work.
  • Training helps in providing consistency in knowledge and experience of employees by ensuring that they are familiar with the policies and procedures.
  • Effective training and development program provides job satisfaction to employees because employees will feel that they are valued so they will be motivated to perform well.
  • Highest level of performance of the employees through effective training will help them to improve customer satisfaction.
  • Training and development programs is one of the important technique to retain the employees.

It is important for managers to focus on motivating their employees above and beyond the paychecks because:-

  • Trust is very important in motivating employees to work collaboratively in order to meet the goal. It is very important for the managers to build trust vertically and horizontally. People like to stay and work in an environment where they can trust the colleagues and trust the leader.
  • It increase employees' commitment towards the organization.
  • Employees become loyal to the organization and perform better as well as provide exceptional customer service.
  • Motivated employees will behave in acceptable manner and work as per the organization values and culture.
  • Motivated employees work collaboratively and the conflict situations are resolved effectively.
  • Motivated employees give highest level of performance and helps in creating a high performance team.
