First, some English:
The standard meaning of a sentence such as
(P) Chris and Robin are tall
is
(P') Chris is tall and Robin is tall.
The sentence (P) is a briefer form of the sentence (P'), with
exactly the same meaning.
(And, under the assumptions of HW 1, they are both
statements).
Similarly, the standard meaning of a sentence such as
(Q) Chris or Robin is tall
Is
(Q') Chris is tall or Robin is tall.
The sentence (Q) is a briefer form of the sentence (Q'), with
exactly the same meaning.
[Regarding the verb “is”: Standard English calls for the use of the
singular verb “is” in this context, even if BOTH Chris and Robin
are being referred to by “Chris or Robin”. The fact that the verb
“is” appears does not allow you to conclude that one is talking
about only one of the two individuals.
See more on this below, after the statement of the Problem for this
Lesson.]
Now, the problem for this Lesson: Based upon our logical understanding of the logical connective (disjunction) “or” (∨), is the sentence (Q) above ambiguous? Explain clearly. If you believe that (Q) is not ambiguous, describe (simply) how one could perform a (simple) experiment to determine if (Q) is true or false. (Complete details not required; just a simple description.) |
[More on the English, just for reference, not specifically relevant
to this Lesson: If I were talking about “My sons or my mother ...”,
standard English would usually require “My sons or my mother IS
...”. If I were talking about “My mother or my sons ...”, standard
English would say “My mother or my sons ARE ...”. Exactly same
meaning, different verb required (by standard English).]
