The small molecules behave according to law of quantum mechanics. The molecules vibrate at different energy levels according to the temperatures they are exposed to. The higher the temperature , more is the energy level and hence higher the vibrations. At lower temperatures such as absolute zero , the vibrations of the molecules decrease but does not approach zero in any case. This is called as zero point energy.
the extrapolation of the temperature of a gas back to absolute zero ( 0 K) is a theoretical idea, but is not physically possible. why is this not physically possible? The extrapolation of the temperature of a gas back to absolute zero (0 K) is a theoretical idea, but is not physically possible. Why is this not physically possible?
Q1. a. At absolute zero temperature, the entropy of a pure crystalline substance is zero. Justify the statement. Why entropy becomes zero at absolute zero temperature. b. The third law of thermodynamics relates the entropy (randomness) of matter to its absolute temperature. Which of the following statements are in agreement with the third law of thermodynamics? Check all that apply. Check all that apply. At absolute zero, the interatomic distance within a crystal is minimized. As the temperature of a perfect crystal increases, the random vibrations of the molecules decrease. At zero degrees kelvin, substances maximize entropy. In a gaseous state, the entropy of the system is...
