1, I selected obesity as a major public health issue because it is one of the major issues. As it is affecting numerous population. Obesity is defined as having excess body fat. Overweight is defined as having excess body weight for a particular height from fat, muscle, bone, water or combination of these factors. Body mass index is a widely screening tool for measuring both obesity and overweight.

2, How long health issue been prevalent in community-

The percentage of children with obesity in the United states has more than tripled since the 1970s. Today about one in five school aged children(6-19y) has obesity.

3, Factors that have caused the issue to become a public health issue-

Many factors contribute to childhood obesity include, genetics, metabolism- how your body changes food and oxygen into energy it can use, eating and physical activity behaviors, environmental factors, social and inddividual psychology. The dietary and physical activity behaviors of children and adolescents are influenced by many sectors of society, including families, communities, schools, child care settings, medical care providers, faith based institutions, government agencies, media, food and beverage industries and entertainment industries.

Some data shows that children with obesity miss more days of school compared to students with normal weights. Missed days of school, whether due to illness or to avoid weight based bullying can make it hard to keep up academically. Many experts found that comprehensive school baseed approach is effective at preventing obesity.

4, Social implications of the obesity:

Productivity measures the absenteeism(costs due to the employees being absent from work for obesity related health reasons and presenteeism(decreased productivity of employess while at work as well as premature mortality and disability. The social consequences like not mingling with others likely to get depression, more chances of bullying, fewer achievements, more like to be single and predispose to obesity.

5, Prevention and intervention measures to adress the obesity:

The CDC recommended strategies for obesity prevention are,

-Increased availability of healtheir food and beverage choices in public service venues

-Improve availabiliy of affordable healtheir food and beverages choices in public service avenues

-Improve the availability of mechanisms for purchasing food from farms

-Provide incentives for the production, distribution, and procurement of foods from local farms

-Discourage consumption of sugar sweetened beverages

-Increase support for breastfeeding

-Require physical education in schools

-Enhance infrastructure support bicycling, walking

6, Teenage pregnancy is not being adequately adressed. The personal and societal impact of teenage pregnancy are enormous. About 84% pregnancies are unintended. In 1990, teenage pregnancy rates in 10 states could not be calculated because those states didnot collect data on the age of the woman obtaining abortions. However these 10 states accounted for approximately 39% of all US abortions in 1990. The data is not adequately reported as the teenage pregnancy is not reported. The inadequate reporting of those cases that leads to inadequate census.
