The unknown compound is benzamide (PhCONH2) having melting point in the range 127 to 130 °C. In this molecule no halogen or sulfur atoms present. Molecular formula and mass are C7H7NO and 121.14 g/mol respectively. It is soluble in ether and water.

It is a primary amide compound, hence C=O, -NH2 are present. Here the

1. amide carbonyl stretching frequency is at 1654 cm-1

2. two N-H stretching frequency at 3363 and 3164 cm-1 (primary amides produce two N-H stretch absorption: 3400-3250).

3. N-H bending is at 1577 cm-1 (amide N-H bending is at the range 1550-1640 cm-1).
