Cultural competence is the ability of providers and organizations to deliver health care to meet the patient cultural, social needs, it helps improve quality care and health outcome... Haitian Americans resist acculturation and follow traditional cultural, religious, spiritual and family values. They believe spiritual healing and practice worship and they worship spirit for relieving illness and protect from harm.In Haiti culture food taboo and homosexuality taboo to protect spirits with feasts. Haitians touch friends and family, they allow providers a supportive touch. personal space they maintain with anyone with 1-2 feet distance and maintain reasonable distance with health care providers, they avoid children during the adult conversation. they will be very particular with strangers when they provide food or health care service they ask for proofs.
Haitians avoid eye contact to avoid insolence, children avoid eye contact with adults but acculturated adults have eye contact with each other. Hand gestures Haitians use mostly, no other gestures they use, they never express emotions other than relatives, with family, friends, they use hand gestures and loud conversation for reinforcement. They cry and express fear, they fold arms across their chest, roll their eyes and look upward ceiling for any major incidents. kiss and informal embrace are for affection and acceptance, a formal handshake for greeting others, men do not embrace women. Haitian from low socioeconomics are past and present-oriented, well socioeconomic background is present and future-oriented.
Haitians try home remedies by preferring herbal treatment, the patient says their illness to the clinician than symptoms and seek for self-diagnosis. If their herbal medicine and help from voodoo priest fails they seek a physician. Acute diarrhea, intestinal infection, malnutrition, respiratory infection are the leading causes of Haitian illness, they seek medical attention for that disease. to provide Haitian people health care by understanding and knowledge of Haitian culture can provide most informed culturally appropriate care.
