There is a growing concern that we are currently not producing enough providers to treat the existing number of patients, much less any influx of new patients. This is a far cry from the 1980s, when it was felt we had too many providers. This swinging pendulum of supply will be the topic of this week’s assignment. First, define what a physician shortage is. Is the shortage found within the entire profession or isolated to certain areas? What impact has the nursing shortage had on the shortage of physicians? Next, identify and discuss the long- and short-term consequences of a physician shortage (Be sure to discuss the private and public market). Identify and discus the 3 general approaches that can be used to decrease the demand for physician services. Discuss 3 approaches to increase physician supply.
