A Z score can be defined as a number of standard deviations a score is above or below the mean. The Z scores helps in describing various aspects of the distribution like percentile ranks, percentages of scores between points, etc. The distribution almost always lies between the Z scores of -3 and 3.

  • z-score of 1 is 1 standard deviation above the mean.
  • score of 2 is 2 standard deviations above the mean.
  • score of -1.8 is -1.8 standard deviations below the mean.

score of zero tells you the values is exactly average while a score of +3 tells you that the value is much higher than average.
