General Motor's executives told me they were looking for 3 qualities in prospective employees. First was politeness, the second was being a self-starter and not have to be told regularly what to do, and the third was the ability to work with all types of people. What do you think? (300 words)

I personally believe that the qualities for prospective employees mentioned by GM Motors are realistic and have a global mindset.

  • Politeness: It is the value which GM holds closely and it makes sense as it helps to develop customer-centric behavior. It helps to make a first good impression, helps to tackle the arguments, also helps to network well and makes an employee considerate of other viewpoints.
  • Being polite helps the employee as it contributes to satisfaction in the job, the respect factor leads to better engagement in teams, it helps to create a fair and stress-free environment. It also helps as all employees are able to share knowledge with each other and overall helps to improve the bottom line of the organisation.
  • Being a self-starter and not have to be told regularly what to do: This is an important skill as it helps an employee advance faster in the organisation. Being self-starter it helps to motivate other employees, contributes positively to the workplace culture and also helps in becoming effective leaders. The organisation is able to provide better resources, training and support which helps to improve the performance of employees.
  • Not being told regularly helps to save costs, removes inefficiencies and the organisation is able to focus on broader areas leading to a productive work environment.
  • Ability to work with all types of people: The ability to work with all types of people is an important requirement in a globalised and multinational setup. The employees should be inclusive and have the ability to work with co-members from different cultures and background. Accepting viewpoints and perspectives from others help to implement better ideas and bring a positive cultural environment as well. If an employee is able to work with all types of people then it leads to faster progress, increases the potential to lead projects in the organisation and creates acceptability from others in the organisation.
