Expert Q&A The design of any power transmission system is very sensitive to the magnitude of the current in the lines as determined by the applied loads. Increased current result in increased power losses in the transmission lines due to the resistance of the lines. Every effort must therefore be made to keep current levels at a minimum. The process of introducing reactive elements to bring the power factor closer to unity is called power factor correction. A load as shown in Figure 2 has impedance of Z 100 + j100 Q. (a) Find the parallel capacitive required to correct the power factor to (i) 0.95 lagging and (ii) 1.0 Assume that the source is operating at o-377 rad/s. (b) Apply any software/simulations tools to verify your answer. line current Customer's Z ParaliolZ Load terminalsimpedance Power company generator Figure 2 use of an added parallel impedance Z, to correct the customer's power factor

VO) L1 L2 Line VO LI Power Calculations Learning Goal: In this tutorial, you will practice the calculation of power in circuits containing loads, including the effects of non-ideal transmission lines, and practice how to improve the power factor for an entire system. Many appliances (eg., hair dryers, coffee makers, and refrigerators) and industrial loads are powered by AC sources. The ability to be able to calculate their power needs is important in a number of situations. Before completing this...
