Alpha radiation are the least penetrating and can be stopped by a piece of paper.

Beta radiation are more penetrating than alpha particle few milimeters of aluminium can absorb it, for some high energy beta particles low molecular weight materials like plastic, wood, water or acryllic glass are used.

Gamma tradition can be stopped by atoms of heavy molecular weight. Heavier the better. Depleted uranium and thorium are used or more oftenly lead is used (usually a few centimeters), barium sulphate are also used as protection measure.
