Competency: Mathematics in Healthcare
Discuss two problems in the healthcare field that have mathematical solutions.
Course Outcomes:
HS290-3: Demonstrate competencies relevant to a career focus area within health sciences.
GEL-2.01: Relate mathematics to the discipline of Health Science.
Instructions
Identify two healthcare problems with mathematical solutions. An actual or hypothetical situation may be used as an example. Any actual situation should be presented as a hypothetical one, with any names and other identifying information changed to protect anonymity. For each problem, begin with a brief summary of the situation. Provide step-by-step demonstration of the math execution. Give a rationale for why this example is important to practice.
Health care field where it is concerned with the maintenance and restoration of the health of the body or mind through a systematic procedure such as prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, illness or injury delivered via health care professionals such as doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other health care related professionals.
Each and every day the professionals who were working in the health care field meet the demands of the patient by using simple to complex mathematics or formula or equations.
With the application of mathematics, the doctors are advising/prescribing the dose of a medication by assessing height and weight of the patient.
Nurses are administering the IV fluids to the patient by calculating the drip factor thus adjusting the dose.
For preparing the diet plan or menu plan to the patients the nurse and dietitians will use some formula or equations to assess BMI etc.
a. A patient is suffered from a bacterial infection
Weight = 100 Ibs and needs amoxicillin 20mg bid and the concentration of amoxicillin os 100mg/ml. Calculate the dose?
Here the daily dose of amoxicillin =20mg bid
The concentration =100mg/ml
Then we calculate the Dose = Total mg/Number of milligrams/ml
=40/100
=0.4
b. Mr.X, 72year old male admitted to the hospital after experiencing CVA. A duo tube placed after he failed his swallow evaluation with a plan for Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy tube placement before discharge.Mr.X has an H/O CVD, HTN and diverticulosis. He denies the change in appetite, intake, and body weight prior to administration.

anthropometric data: Height = 5'8'
Weight = 163 Ibs
BMI = 24.8kg/m2
Estimated daily needs =
# Energy =1850K, Cal =2000Kcal, Protein =74g-89g, Fluid =2000ml
These two scenarios are very common in the health care field why because nowadays infection and CVA are very important and need prior care.

Illustrate how the technology of electronic records has altered healthcare administration and patient care. Compare and contrast electronic records versus manual records regarding healthcare administration and patient care. Include at least four points of comparison/contrast and analyze the implications. An actual or hypothetical situation may be used for example. Any actual situation should be presented as a hypothetical one, with any names and other identifying information changed to protect anonymity.
