The term standard of care means for the nurse based on the guidelines of the American Nurses Association (ANA), “authoritative statements of the duties regarding the Standards of Professional Nursing Practice that all registered nurses, regardless of role, population or specialty are expected to perform competently” (2010, p. 2). Thus it means an average level of care expected and that a reasonably advanced practice nurse, practicing in his or her area of expertise and caring for a same or similar patient under the similar or same circumstances is giving.
