Concepts and reason

Draw the neutral organic product for the reaction between an alkene and methanol by using Markovnikov’s rule. According to this rule, the negatively charged species (i.e. methoxide ion in this case) attacks at more substituted carbon atom.

Fundamentals

Alkenes react with methanol in presence of an acid H2SO4{{\rm{H}}_{\rm{2}}}{\rm{S}}{{\rm{O}}_{\rm{4}}} to form ethers as products. The reaction between 3-methylbut-1-ene and HI undergo in three steps. They are,

1.Protonation

2.Nucleophilic attack

3.deprotonation

The reaction is,

CH3
H2SO4
Hac=c
→
H3C—6+

CH3
2-methylprop-1-ene
