Answer #1

Doctrine of double effect says that if doing something morally good has a morally bad side effect ,then it's ethically ok to do it providing the bad side effect wasn't intended.

The principle of doctrine of double effect is used to justify the administration of medication to relieve pain even though it may lead to the unintended although foreseen ,consequence of hastening death by causing respiratory depression . In many review of literature its mentioned that the risk of respiratory depression or death from opioid analgesics is a myth than fact and that there is less evidence that the use of medication to control pain hastens death .

Hence, the belief in double effect of pain medication remains widespread . So, I will provide the medication for the patient. Applying the principle of double effect to end of life issues keep going this myth and results in the undertreatment of physical suffering at the end of life . This concept of double effects of opioids or analgesics also has been used in support of legalization of physician assisted suicide and euthanasia.

No ,my feelings won't change if the patient expresses a desire to die and if the patient is not terminally ill because in this case the intention is to relieve the pain not to kill the patient . It is called the doctrine of double effect.
