Answer #1

(a) When the temperature increases, the equilibrium conversion of methane to carbon and hydrogen, does also increase.

i.e. Equilibrium conversion of methane \propto T

(b) N2(g) + 3H2(g) ----> 2NH3(g) (Haber's process).

Here also, the same strategy as in (a) will be followed.

    Syngas (CO+ H2) can be produced by reacting methane with water in the following reaction: CH4(g) + H2O(g) --> CO(g) + 3H2(g). If you want to maximize the syngas products at equilibrium, should you: (a) run the reaction at high or low temperature? (b) run the reaction at high or low total pressures? Briefly explain your answer.

    At 500 K CH3OH, CH4, and other hydrocarbons can be formed from CO and H2. Until recently the main source of the CO mixture for the synthesis of CH3OH was methane: CH4(g)+H2O(g)=CO(g)+3H2(g). When coal is used as the source, the "synthesis gas" has a different composition: C(graphite)+H2O(g)=CO(g)+H2(g). Suppose we have a catalyst that catalyzes only the formation of CH3OH. a) What pressure is required to convert 25% of the CO to CH3OH at 500K if the synthesis gas comes from...
