Abramitzky, Boustan and Eriksson (2016) use the names that immigrants give to their children to measure “cultural assimilation”. Explain the advantage of using this measure relative to conventional measures such as intermarriage and location decisions.

Names can be very generic and hence is big advantages to idnetify cultural assimilation. Names can help idnetify ones geographical context as well as race or caste or creed and thus evaluation of culture becomes easier and gives top of mind recall.

However intermarriage is itslef mixed and thus the identity of hybrid culture becomes difficult to adapt and similarly locations can have multiple cultural diaspora and identifying persons culture based on location is biased ajd gives inaccuracies as densification of population frok various part of world has made this generic.
