Mental health system has become an integral part of healthcare. It supports and treat patients with mental disabilities. The mental health system is gradually strengthening its core. It keeps the mental health at the top most place while making strategies and agendas. It provides better coordinated care for mentally ill patients through trained and quality staff. It also draws attention of the society and other institution towards the needs of mentally compromised patients. It also provides education on how to provide primary and secondary care to such patients. It also counsells the patient’s family and caregivers on how to deal with these patients.
The mental health system also lacks efficacy on various grounds. The primary challenge faced by the system is to identify the mentally compromised patients. Many times the patient or his family do not disclose the status of mental health of patient and thus it becomes difficult to identify these patients. The second challenge is to protect the patients against discrimination, abuse and violence due to lack of strict laws abd policies. The mental health system is still not very capable of dealing with severe mental illness. Housing, employment and financial issues are another major concerns that need to be addressed. The number of suicides due to mental illness have also not shown much improvement.
