Answer #1

What is the pressure difference across the width of each boat?

According to Bernoulli's theorem, we have

PA + (1/2) \rho w vA2 = PB + (1/2) \rho w vB2

(PA - PB) = (1/2) \rho w vB2 - (1/2) \rho w vA2

\DeltaP = (1/2) \rho w (vB2 - vA2)

where, \rho w = density of fresh water = 1030 kg/m3

vB = speed of a boat B = 9 m/s

vA = speed of a boat A = 7 m/s

then, we get

\DeltaP = (0.5) (1030 kg/m3) [(9 m/s)2 - (7 m/s)2]

\DeltaP = (515 kg/m3) (32 m2/s2)

\DeltaP = 16480 Pa
