Imagine that you are a fitness professional working in a health club.  A new client named, Carla, comes in to meet with you.   She tells you that she is a previously active woman who wants to continue her exercise program.

During the meeting you learn that:   

  • She is 2 months pregnant
  • She is 26 years old
  • She is 5’6” tall and weighs 130 lbs
  • She has no significant medical history
  • Her current exercise includes –Resistance training 3 to 4 times/week, running 3 to 4 times/week (3 to 4 miles) and Yoga 2 times/week
  • As a fitness professional, how do you proceed?  
  • How would you advise Carla to modify her exercise program?

What exercises or movements should she avoid? Why?

Pregnancy is a period of women's life with two lives.So extra care has to be taken in all aspects especially in exercise

As a fitness professional, the better way to proceed are

  • To plan an exercise regimen which will benefit both the life
  • Will have less strain exercise avoiding extreme energy expenditure exercises
  • Cardiovascular exercise for about 3 to 4 days a week
  • 30 minutes of exercise which are moderate in intensity can be done
  • To maintain hydration to prevent dehydration during and after exercise

The modifications needed in her exercise are to avoid

  • Mild resistance trainings can be done as she is healthy with no medical conditions
  • Jogging instead of running

The exercises which has to be avoided are

  • Any exercises which conlresdes the abdomen, holding breath
  • No exercise which makes one to lie flat for more than 3 minutes
  • No heated yoga ,squatting exercise ,pilates
  • Aerobic exercises
