discuss 3 major initiatives taken by the federal government that have impacted positively on the development of healthcare IT
In 2009 the federal govt set aside almost $30 billion as a part of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act for a program that encourages hospitals and providers to adopt electronic health records systems (EHR). A lot of funds were allocated to help train health information technology (HIT) workers and help hospitals and providers in setting up EHRs that would allow the health data historically hidden away in paper files to be viewed among providers and used to improve health care quality.
1) Increase the use of Electronic Health Records that would be readily available to all healthcare providers
2) Create many RECs (Regional Extension Centers) to allow EHRs through educating physicians to sign a letter of commitment saying that they would adopt an EHR
3) Fostering physician interest and engaging patients to use EHRs and improve health care through IT.
4) Dealing with Security concerns related to patient data management and maintaining their data privacy so that their data is confidential.
5) Training Healthcare Information Technology workers and encourage the adoption of HIT in private insurers and large employers.
