Bioethics Case Study Alma be taken off of life support. Alma is 89-year-old woman and suffered from high blood pressure. She was active for her age. One night she suffered a stroke, resulting in a brain hemorrhage. Her family immediately shifted her to the hospital, and the doctor gave them the bad news that Alma had gone into a coma. The brain imaging showed a number of clots due to bursting of the artery. As a result, the doctor provided some options for the Alma's family such as removing ventilator, leaving her on the ventilator, or operating a brain surgery. However, the doctors advised the family that at this age she cannot survive a brain operation, and the chances of her coming out of coma are very remote. If the family members approve the surgery, it's not a big probability for her to survive, alternatively they could keep her on the ventilator. It was a difficult decision for the family; therefore, they remain undecided. The family suggests Rosita, Alma's daughter to hire a nurse to assist her in taking care of Alma because she cannot take care of Alma every day. Since Alma was paralyzed, her family wants to put her out of her misery, hoping that she could pass away peacefully. Some suggested to simply remove her oxygen tube from her nose, then her misery and their suffering would been stopped along with her breathe. After the kind suggestion, many of the family members opposed this ruthless idea. However, her son, uncle, and other family members were in favor of Euthanasia, believing in mercy killing--they will be helping her and freeing her from her pain. Her daughter, Alma's seven grandsons and granddaughters said because she is in a coma, she is unconscious of her surrounding and cannot make decisions for herself, by doing the so called "mercy killing would be murder. In overall, it is unethical to make a decision for her because she is in unconscious. Alma's son and other relatives that believe in mercy killing wants the doctor to take Alma off the ventilator since there is little to no possibility for her to survive, even after the surgery. At this point, the family believes that they are just wasting time and money on Alma. They divulged, "what if she never wakes up?" He believes that by mercy killing, it would do her mother a favor by ending her suffering and their false hope that one day she will wake up. They also believe that even though she is paralyzed but they do not know what it really feels like, what if Alma feels pain while paralyzed? And even if she does recover, she is 89-year-olds that could die any time, and it would be a waste of money for the surgery and still be a loss for the family. On the other hand, when Alma's daughter found out about the decision, she was clear that her mother could die any time, but she and alma's grandsons and daughters agree the keeping her on the ventilator. She just wants the doctor to do everything possible to save her mother's life. The doctor struggle what they should do the surgery or keep her on the ventilation and try to save her life or take her off the ventilation and let her die.

Euthanasia or mercy killing is actually a point of debate.Alma 89 yrs at this stage developing coma is truly very hard that she will survive if she comes out of it.

In the condition where patient is on ventilator nursing care needs to be taken is at higher. All the body systems are compromise in comatose condition. Skin integrity , bladder and bowel movement, nutritional needs all has to prioritize in order to make patient survive when he is in state of coma and post coma.
