Answer #1

At the 1787 convention, delegates devised a plan for a stronger federal government with three branches—executive, legislative and judicial—along with a system of checks and balances to ensure no single branch would have too much power. The Bill of Rights were 10 amendments guaranteeing basic individual protections, such as freedom of speech and religion, that became part of the Constitution in 1791. To date, there are 27 constitutional amendments.

the Articles of Confederation gave Congress the power to govern foreign affairs, conduct war and regulate currency; however, in reality, these powers were sharply limited because Congress had no authority to enforce its requests to the states for money or troops.

In 1786, Alexander Hamilton, a lawyer and politician from New York, called for a constitutional convention to discuss the matter. The Confederation Congress, which in February 1787 endorsed the idea, invited all 13 states to send delegates to a meeting in Philadelphia.

Pros of the Constitution

1. Outlines the basic stucture of the Government.

2. It limits the power of the government.

3. Allows government to charge taxes.

4. Allows for the adding of Amendments.

5. Allows for popular sovereignty.

6. Structures government to that of a Federalism. This meaning the National has most power then some power is split between states.

7. Protects natural rights in "Bill of Rights"

8. Calls for Checks and Balances in the government (3 branches).

9. The constitution has lasted this long so far.

10. Serves as a model to other countries who wish to be independent.

Cons of the Constitution

1. Extremely difficult to pass new amendments.

2. The amount of representatives the Constitutional calls for is merely 65. 65 is a little enough number that none of the representatives could blend in with average people. They would quickly be picked out of a crowd.

3. Left out Women and African-Americans.

4. Some portions of it are too vague and offer room for mis-interpretation.
