The document that compares planned financial outcomes with the actual financial outcome is called a variance report. It compares what was supposed to happen with what actually happened or analyzing the budget and actual performance.

Variance analysis is part of budget monitoring and it is part of the nurse manager’s budgeting functions. It is done when the actual expenses exceed budgeted allowance. This allows the nursing leader to know the exact reason for the excess of expenditure.

When the reason is known, the nurse leader can take appropriate action to prevent such a problem in the next budget.

The variance analysis is done by the finance manager or the nurse manager according to the organization’s policy.
