Tracheostomy is the procedure of opening through the neck into the trachea. This is done by making an incision into the neck. It helps in breathing by opening the airway.

Care/treatment evaluation:

The tracheostomy tube is to be handled properly and one should follow the instruction of care for the tube. Supplies that come along the tube should be taken care of with precautions. Cleanliness is important in the procedure of handling the tube. Wash hands with soap properly while using the tube and put the sterile gloves on. In case cannula is present in your tube clean it with proper care. The cotton-tipped swabs should be soaked in half hydrogen peroxide and half water. It should be used to clean the exposed parts of the outer cannula and the skin around the stoma.

How the patient tolerates the procedure:

Patients tolerate the procedure as the patients are given anesthesia prior to the surgery. Intravenous propofol is induced and the endotracheal tube is inserted. Certain aspects like breathlessness, inability to speak and pain during endotracheal suctioning decrease the tolerance while the presence of relatives, information and early mobilization has been reported to increase tolerance. As the phenomenon of tolerance of endotracheal tube is complex, a critical and reflected evaluation of the patient's behavior is necessary. The patient should be evaluated on a daily basis and interventions that increase tolerance should be adapted.
