Radiation biology is essential to study because the patient requires an adequate radiation dose for dental imaging. The radiation is harmful at higher intensity to result in either short-term radiation effects or long-term radiation effects. Therefore, exposure time, dose equivalent measurements are significant to avoid harmful effects during the acquisition of dental images.
The general population is generally exposed to the radiation, but some of the professionals are prone to occupational exposure of radiation. Unnecessary radiation exposure can be prevented by implementing appropriate operating procedures (of the instruments releasing ionizing radiation), locking the radiation source, transportation limitations, and restricting the entry into radiation areas legally.
The ionizing radiation is used in the production of radiographic images. However, unnecessary exposure to ionizing radiation can cause mutations, which can produce an adverse health effect. So, all the individuals that are at risk of exposure to radiation regularly, must be provided with personal monitoring devices.
The radiographer must leave the room during x-ray exposure because it would otherwise be an unnecessary exposure for the radiologist, while the patient receives the diagnostic benefit. In order to limit the x-ray exposure, the radiographer leave the room during x-ray exposure of the patient. The personal monitoring devices provide an appropriate estimation of the radiation exposure of an individual. Examples of the personal monitoring devices include,
The monitoring devices can identify the type and energy of the radiation. The monitoring devices are usually placed on the trunk of the body (badges) except when using a protective apron. When wearing a protective apron, the monitoring device is placed at the collar level above the apron.
