A group of movie executives is interested in gender differences in movie genre preferences. They take a random sample of self-reported males and females and finds that 17 of the females report that comedy is their favorite type of movie whereas 20 report drama as their favorite, 13 choose thrillers as their favorite, and 10 choose documentaries. Among males, 18 choose comedies, 11 choose dramas, 21 choose thrillers, and 7 choose documentaries as their favorites.

1. Develop a bivariate table to display these data, making sure to label your row and column variables and providing a title for the table.

2. Use the data presented in your bivariate table to describe the association between gender and movie preferences in the sample. How would you characterize the strength and direction of this association?

3. Do the data provide sufficient evidence that the association in the sample represents a real association in the population? Use an alpha level of .05 and report all of the key information used to reach your conclusion.

4. If you double the number of cases in each cell of the table, would your your description of the association in the sample, or your decision about the statistical significance of the association, change? Explain.

Answer #1

(1)

Gender
Males Females
Preferences comedy 17 18
drama 20 11
thriller 13 21
documentaries 10 7

(2) To characterize the strength and direction of this association, we have to use linear correlation coefficient and

linear correlation coefficient=r=0.166 .This is weak and positive association

(3) and critical value of r=0.950 for sample size n=4

so there is positive association but not statistical significant at alpha=0.05

as the critical value is more than calculated/observed value

(4) the correlation coefficient =r=0.166 and its critical value =0.950 , so there is positive association but not statistical significant at alpha=0.05.

as the critical value is more than calculated/observed value

Gender
Males Females
Preferences comedy 34 36
drama 40 22
thriller 26 42
documentaries 20 14
