Respiratory acidosis is an elevation in the PaCo2 level , caused by hypoventilation with resultant excess carbonic acid .Acidosis can be due to or associated with primary defects in lung function or changes in normal respiratory pattern.
The nursing intervention for respiratory acidosis are as follows-
. First assess the condition of the client by monitoring respiratory rate , depth and effort as because alveolar hypoventilation and associated hypoxaemia lead to respiratory distress or failure.
. Auscultate breath sounds as it identifies areas of decreased ventilation or airway obstruction.
.Monitor heart rate and rhythm as tachycardia and dysrythmias may occur due to hypoxia.
.Note skin colour , temperature, moisture as diaphoresis ,pallor ,cool skin are the late changes associated with severe hypoxaemia.
.Encourage and assist with deep breathing exercise.
.Sunction as necessary.
. Provide airway adjunct as indicated.
. place in semi fowlers position as because these sunction ,exercise improve lung ventilation and prevent airway obstruction.
. provide appropriate chest physiotherapy including breathing exercise as per doctors advise which helps in clearing secretion and improved ventilation.
.Administer medication as per doctors advise.
. Continuously monitor ABG and pulse oximetry reading and inform to the physician .
