answer the following question on general music
1..What does Willoughby mean when he says “Music is Sound and
Silence?” What does he mean by “Music Moves Through Time?”
2. Willoughby says that music is art. What is art? (This is not an
easy question. You may have to use outside sources to answer
this.)
3.Identify at least three ways that music can be functional.
4. What is the difference between composing and improvising?
Silence is also a part of music. Many classical music composers recognize the importance of silence as a compositional technique with its own aesthetic and dramatic effects, rather than silence being merely a rest from sound.

Music spans everything from folk art and high art. A lot of music has attributes of both. Great music can be universal appeal and be remembered for generations. A good piece of music encourages repeated listening, performance, and study. It challenges the listener and performer.
Popular music is widely assumed to be different in kind from the serious music or art music that, until very recently, monopolized attention in philosophical discussions of music. In recent years, however, popular music has become an important topic for philosophers pursuing either of two projects. First, popular music receives attention from philosophers who see it as a test case for prevailing philosophies of music. Even now, most philosophy of music concentrates on the European classical repertoire. Therefore, if there are important differences between popular and art music, widening the discussion to include popular music might encourage us to reconsider the nature of music. Second, popular music increasingly serves as a focal point in general debates about art and aesthetic value. A growing number of philosophers regard popular music as a vital and aesthetically rich field that has been marginalized by traditional aesthetics. They argue that popular music presents important counterexamples to entrenched doctrines in the philosophy of art.

Music is functional, serving nonmusical purposes which can be ceremonial, therapeutic, or religious.
Ceremonial - this type reflects one of music's earliest functional uses which has remained relevant even today. Commomerative ceremonies not only remind one of the past events or beliefs, they represent an experience or a myth to people who did not live the original experience. Music is viewed as an integral part of ceremonies and does much to enhance the formality of such occassions.
Therapeutic - Therapeutic music is music that is intended to alleviate a physical, emotional, or mental concern. Common usage of the term usually refers to acoustic music played or sung live in a variety of healthcare settings, to enhance the healing atmosphere.
Therapeutic music is offered by CMPs and other trained therapeutic musicians by holding an awareness that bringing beauty, presence, and the power of music into a healthcare environment may facilitate healing. Therapeutic musicians focus on meeting a patient’s present needs with therapeutic music in-the-moment, rather than having the intention of accomplishing a specific goal or outcome. Therapeutic musicians use the intrinsic healing elements of live music and intentionality to create an environment conducive to healing.
Religious Music -
Religious music (also sacred music) is music performed or composed for religious use or through religious influence.

Some basic differences -
1. Composition is written. Improvisation is not.
2. Improvisation takes place in real time. Composition does not.
3. Improvisation is often a group activity. Composition is rarely a group activity.
