Definition of hypertension. It is a condition in which systolic blood pressure greater then 140 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure greater than 90 mm Hg. Causes of hypertension. * Smoking Nicotine content in the cigarettes cause vasoconstriction and elevation of blood pressure. * Obesity. Obesity result in atherosclerotic changes in the blood vessel wall which leads to hypertension. * Genetics. Specific type of genes cause elevated blood pressure. * High sodium diet. It leads to increase re absorption and retension of water in the body leads to hypertension. * Chronic kidney diseases. Kidney diseases affect the systemic circulation and fluid electrolyte balance which leads to hypertension. * Adrenal and thyroidal disorders leads to hypertension. Clinical manifestations. * Vital signs measurement shows elevated blood pressure. * Dizziness. * Chest pain. * Flushing. * Shortness of breath. * Retinal hemorrhages. * Hematuria. * Bleeding from nose. Preventive measures. * Proper maintainance of body weight. * Maintain a balanced diet(DASH diet) Dietry approach to stop hypertension. * Restrict over use of sodium. * Regular exercises. * Routine blood pressure examinations. * Avoid bad habits like over use of alcohol and smoking. Treatment of hypertension Pharmacological management * Use of antihypertensives which include * ACE inhibitors.(Enalapril) * Beta blockers.(Propranolol.) * Diuretics (Furosemide) * Calcium channel blockers (Diltiazem). Non pharmacological management. * Stress relieving exercises. * Low sodium diet. * Regular exercises. * Routine monitoring of blood pressure. |
