In Nigeria they are currently battling an epidemic of malaria across the whole country. Some areas across the country are considered high prevalence and other parts are low prevalence but there is not an area that it free from risk of malaria in nigeria. (CDC, 2018) Lack of access to antimalarial medication is a huge hindrance in fighting malaria for these people not to mention they don’t have the resources available offered to them like in the United States. Their lifestyle and homes are not always able to be mosquito proof and that is how this disease is spread, whether they are outside working during the day or in their homes which may not have everything sealed up tight depending on their economic status. Other factors include a low income for their families, nets that have pesticides on them, and not having toilets in the home. (Malar, 2016)

Malaria is present everywhere in Nigeria, some areas have more of a prevalence and others are at a lower risk but still affected by the disease. The people do what they can to protect themselves and their families but not all of them have access to the antivirals depending on their location. The President’s Malaria Initiative PMI, is currently working to help rid Nigeria of malaria through vaccinating their people and trying to make a bigger change as they work to provide better protection for them. The overall cost of this budget is 65,000 dollars and their end goal is to have a malaria-free Nigeria. (PMI, 2018) (PMI, 2018) The PMI is making changes across countries affected in africa, the changes they have implemented are showing promise when they look at eradicating malaria completely. The use of insecticide treated nets and pregnancy prophylactic shots are both helping to reduce the reported cases. (PMI, 2018)

The way PMI is addressing the situation and providing the needed resources for these people is working and as long as they continue to make progress the closer they will get to their goal. The environment is still going to play a role in the prevalence of mosquitoes but if we could get to a point that we could eradicate the infected mosquitoes but not damage their ecosystem. The new advancements in testing for malaria will also be beneficial to getting people treatment faster if they are able to have instant or near instant. If we can prophylactically treat for malaria more people and test those who are at risk, getting them the lifesaving treatment they have available to them.

Answer #1

Answer: In Nigeria malaria has become most epidemic whereas some areas across the country are considered high prevalence and other parts are low prevalence but there is not an area that it free from risk of malaria in Nigeria. Lack of access to antimalarial medication is the major cause that they are unable to fight with malaria. Due to lack of income, not having toilets in the home and no cleanliness in their area as neither their home nor outside is safe from a mosquito. The people do what they can to protect themselves and their families but not all of them have access to the antivirals depending on their location.
