Part A : Assuming that the flash of light arrives in essentially no time at all.

From this rule, the speed of sound which will be given by -

v = d / t

where. d = distance travellled for the flash = 1 mile

t = time taken for the flash = 5 s

then, we get

v = [(1 mi) / (5 s)]

v = 0.2 mi/s

converting mi/s to m/s :

v = (0.2 mi/s) [(1609.34 m) / (1 mi)]

v = 321.8 m/s
