The business proposal under consideration:

To reduce employees working days from 5 days a week to 4 days a week with time per day increased from 8 hours per day to 10 hours per day.

Implications of the business proposal:

1. Reduction in working days per week will surely make employees happy, give more enthusiasm to work positively. In my opinion, giving employees long weekends will give them more time to rejuvenate. This will lead to increased productivity during working days.

2. Further, giving Long weekends can reduce leave availment ratio during week days. Hence, effectively more man days will be applied during week days.

3. If there is any law governing the labour hours per day in the country this decision may lead to paying overtime costs and therefore will increase the cost burden. For e.g. if the country's law allow only 8 hours per day as normal working hours and any working hours above that shall be considered as overtime and overtime has to be paid at say, 1.5 times or 2 times the normal rate. This decision will lead to each employee being paid, daily, 2 hours of overtime.

But the administration costs for 1 day per week will be reduced. This may lead to considerable cost savings.

Hence, from employee satisfaction point this is always a welcome decision but from cost perspective this may not be an advisable one.
