Amniocentesis can be done for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. It can be an effective method in determining fetal lung maturity in the last trimester of pregnancy, when necessary. A retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive study was done to assess Complications or morbidity Associated With Amniocentesis in the Third Trimester of Pregnancy. The samples were 203 pregnant women in the Third Trimester of Pregnancy. The amniocentesis was performed under ultrasound guidance. The study also analyzed the complications resulting from the procedure in comparison with factors like demographic data, etiology, clinical features of the maternal and fetal complications.

The results showed that 205 patients had undergone 249 amniocentesis procedures. The mean gestational age for the samples was 36.7 ± 2.8 weeks. The minor complications associated with the procedure were the extraction of hematic amniotic fluid (4.8%) and preterm labour (1.9%). The major complications were premature rupture of membranes and were the main major complication (1.45%) and premature separation of placenta occurred in two cases (0.8%). The incidence of abortion from the procedure was nil.

In the present study, the resolution of pregnancy after amniocentesis was 24 h. The mode of delivery was mainly via cesarean birth (86.3%; n = 177). Resolution of pregnancy was done either due to comorbidities or because the fetal maturity was confirmed.

The need for amniocentesis during the third trimester of the pregnancy has reduced much due to the improved prenatal care and the development in diagnostic measures like documenting the gestational age with ultrasound. Amniocentesis is still considered as a valid diagnostic tool in patients with definite indications despite the complications.
