Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant (or antiepileptic) drug. It is a lipophilic GABA derivative and crosses the blood brain barrier and enhance the GABA release. It is first line drug for the treatment of convulsion, and reduces the seizure frequency in refractory partial seizures with or without generalization.

Gabapentin is well absorbed orally and excreted unchanged in urine. It has t1/2 of 6 hours.

Dose of gabapentin is started from 300 mg and can be increased to 600 mg TDS as required.

Side effects: mild sedation, tiredness, dizziness and unsteadiness.
