1) Penile cancer defines as the malignant proliferation of cells in penis. Squamous cells are the kind of cells that lines the inner organs of digestive system. Major type of cancer is of squamous cell origin.
2) Etiology: The most common cause of penile cancer are infection results from Human papilloma virus, Human immuno deficiency virus, balanitis, genital warts,poor hygiene results in penile cancer, whitish discharge that deposited in foreskin. Elderly people are at a risk for penile cancer, continuous exposure to ultraviolet Ray's also predisposes to penile cancer.
3) signs and symptoms includes redness and sore over the glans, phimosis, bleeding ,abnormal whitish discharge, dyspareunia, painful urination, wart that doesn't heal for a long time.
4) Most common complications are metastasis of cancer if left untreated, erosions, bleeding, seroma, lymphedema.
5) History collection to collect baseline data regarding the preexisting diseases,family history of carcinoma, exposure to ultraviolet Ray's, wart that doesn't heal for long time.
Diagnostic procedures includes : punch biopsy to remove a circular tissue to detect the penile cancer. Fine needle aspiration cytology involves in removal of fluid from the penile tissues. Sentinel lymph node biopsy to analyze the spread of tumor cells in the lymphatic circulation. Computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging to identify the cross sectional appearance of the cancerous tissues.
6) Nursing considerations :
Pain related to unhealed wart over the glans secondary to squamous cell proliferation over the lining of the penile region
Risk for urinary retention secondary to inability to retract glans
Risk for bleeding related to wart
Risk for infection related to urinary retention secondary to wart over the glans.
