ENDOMETRIAL CANCER:

Endometrial cancer occurs in the uterus. The uterus is the hollow pear-shaped pelvic organ. Cancer in the lining of the endometrium of the uterus is called endometrial cancer.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY:

In the early stage of endometrial cancer starts with the post-menopausal bleeding, on vaginal examination measuring the size of the endometrial thickness of 4 mm or 5 mm. A biopsy is taken, If there is a focal lesion operative hysteroscopy is done or if nonfocal lesion endometrial biopsy is done. Following the stage of cancer whether IA, IB, IC or G3 vaginal brachytherapy is given.

ETIOLOGY:

  • Estrogen replacement therapy without the use of progesterone
  • History of endometrial polyps
  • Irregular periods
  • Starting menstruation at an early age (before age 12)
  • Starting menopause after age 50
  • Tamoxifen, a drug used for breast cancer treatment
  • Diabetes
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:

  • Vaginal bleeding after menopause
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Pelvic pain

COMPLICATION:

  • Change in balance of hormones
  • In fertilization
  • Colon or breast cancer
  • Gall bladder disease
  • High Blood pressure.

HEAD TO TOE ASSESSMENT:

APPEARANCE: The patient appears good and well-nourished.

HEAD: No sign of infection

EYES: Pupil are equally reacting to light

NOSE: No sign of infection or septal deviation

GAIT: Patient is in post-operative unit

EXAMINATION: Pelvic examination has done.

NURSING CARE PLAN:

  • Altered nutritional status
  • Risk for infection
  • The risk for fluid volume deficit
  • Fatigue
  • Fear related to the disease condition

NURSING INTERVENTIONS:

Expect initial shock and disbelief following diagnosis of cancer.

Assess the stage of grief and provide supportive care. Use therapeutic communication and engage in active listening.

Educate the process of diseases and treatment options.

Determine the rating scale from 1- 10 following the frequency and the duration of pain.

Administer analgesics and NSAIDs.

Encourage relaxation techniques.
