Community Based participatory Research ( CBPR)
CBPR is a collaborative approach in which the research study emphasises the public engagement in the studies along with the organizational representatives and researchers resulting in benefiting the members of the community.
CBPR and recreational park
Recreational parks may have the infrastructure designed to produce healthy benefits for its members like walking paths, cycling and other exercise options. Community Based participatory research ensures the involvement of community members and other stakeholders in the various stages of research so that both the researchers and community members involved in the research can be benefited.
A kind of CBPR ' targeted, area based collaboration between a small group of community organisations and academic researchers' can be applied in recreational parks. Researchers has to establish rapport with the members of the community organisations, who uses the park and motivate other members to use the facilities of the parks for the physical fitness and for a healthy body. Community members have to develop a trust on researchers that the project will be useful for every one so that the members will participate in the research project actively.
CBPR project and its impact in the park
CBPR projects can be implement in collaboration with the recreational parks to solve the health issues such as physical inactivity, local problems, and to generate knowledge regarding the issues facing by the particular community( such informations helps the researchers). Studies show that CBPR projects associated with the parks were successful in preventing the childhood obesity and lifestyle diseases ( hypertension, diabetes) in various local areas.
As the Directors of parks and city Mayors are involving along with the researchers for CBPR projects, the parks will get renovated and the facilities will increase. More community participation can be ensured by researchers through various meetings and educational activities for the members in the community. Involvement of local leaders in CBPR may encourage others to participate in it and use the parks effectively.
Examples for activities or interventions in CBPR: Kickball, soft ball, making kites and kite flying, Spring fever dance, Tai chi.
