Ans)Thyroid: Anatomy

- Normal size in adults: 15-20g (proportionally larger in women)
- Look for rise and fall w/ swallowing
- Rare conditions
1) Lingual thyroid (ectopic)
2) Retrosternal thyroid
3) Agenesis

A patch on the back of the tongue at the foramen cecum may result Lingual Thyroid.

Lingual thyroid

- Persistence of thyroid tissue at the base of tongue

- Presents as a BASE OF TONGUE MASS

- No descent of thyroid tissue to the anterior neck

- Caused due to embryological aberrancy in development of thyroid gland.

- Lingual thyroid tissue is associated with an absence of the normal cervical thyroid in 70% of cases. It occurs much more commonly in women than in men.

- In women, symptomatic lingual thyroid glands develop during puberty or early adulthood in most cases.

- It can present at any age and is more common in women.

- The male-to-female ratio is 1 : 5.

- Thoracic thyroid tissue is most frequently found in middle-aged women but may occur in either sex at any age.
