Answer #1

According to Goldman health and prolonged life should be considered to be the top priorities for patients (and thus physicians should decide for patients accordingly). Patients have a right of self-determination; they should have the freedom to make their own choices regarding medical interventions. Decisions regarding their futures should be left up to them because an individual is the best judge of his or her own interests. Self-determination should be considered valuable for its own sake irrespective of its generally positive effects.
