Howard has completed his first week of clinical rotation. His clinical instructor observed him to be intelligent, articulate, and well intentioned, but constantly radiating tension. Howard’s posture is stiff and his voice is shrill when dealing with patient. While patients are answering his questions, he frequently taps his fingers or swings his legs and looks impatient. He doesn’t seem to be aware of the nonverbal messages he is conveying. If you were the clinical instructor, how would you help Howard to overcome these behaviors? Explain in your answer best communication methods and verbal/non-verbal cues Howard is conveying
Answer: Communication is one of the way through which a person can share his views and points. In case of health care professionals it is necessary to listen the patient's complaint, details etc. very keenly. Patient should know that the physician is giving attention towards them .Because the way like Howard was behaving sends a wrong message to the patients as this shows that he is least interested in considering the points told by the Patients.
For the best verbal communication one should deliver best language and speech along with he should be a good listener. Gestures plays an important role in communication, the eye contact with the patient as well as the hand movements describes many things.
