Overview of Circulatory System

Blood vessels form closed tubular systems which carry blood from the heart through the systemic and pulmonary systems. Arteries carry blood away from the heart to smaller arterioles, which feed capillary beds. The capillary beds empty into venules, which coalesce into larger veins. All veins eventually empty into the superior and inferior venae cavae or into the pulmonary veins. These vessels return blood to the heart.

A. List the heart chambers and the major pathways that blood flows through in its circuit through the heart and the pulmonary and systemic systems. Where appropriate, list the names of the major blood vessels.

B. Structure of artery and vein.

1.    The walls contain three distinct structures. The innermost layer is the tunica intima, which consists of a layer of (   ) (   ) epithelium. The pulmonary circulation for system is for the lungs where as the systemic circulation is seen throughout the body.

The structure of artery and vein

The innermost layer is tunica intima which consists of SIMPLE SQUAMOUS EPITHELIUM.

It lies upon a thin layer of connective tissue containing BASEMENT MEMBRANE and ELASTIC fibres.

Surrounding the tunica intima is the tunica MEDIA.

Which is the thickest of the three layers because it contains primarily ELASTIC, INVOLUNTARY, SMOOTH MUSCLE

The outermost layer is the tunica adventitia or TUNICA EXTERNA.

It contains primarily CONNECTIVE TISSUE and ELASTIC and COLLAGEN fibres.

The structures for both arteries and veins is same just the lumen in arteries is narrow because blood flows at high pressure whereas veins have a broad lumen.

Arteries have a thick muscular wall that is the tunica media.
