You are hired to build a geothermal power plant that absorbs heat from a hot water spring and discards heat into the surrounding air, which is at a temperature of 28°. The plant is designed for a maximum (Carnot) efficiency of 0.15.

Answer #1

Temperature of the hot water from the spring = Th

Temperature of the surrounding air = Tc = 28 oC = 28 + 273 K = 301 K

Carnot efficiency of the plant = \eta = 0.15

号-1=

301 0.15-1-

* = 0.85

Th = 354.12 K

Converting to degrees Celsius,

Th = 354.12 - 273

Th = 81.12 oC

Temperature of the hot water gushing from the spring = 81.12 oC

    A power plant taps steam superheated by geothermal energy to 421 K (the temperature of the hot reservoir) and uses the steam to do work in turning the turbine of an electric generator. The steam is then converted back into water in a condenser at 321 K (the temperature of the cold reservoir), after which the water is pumped back down into the earth where it is heated again. The output power (work per unit time) of the plant is...

    1. The geothermal power plant at Chena Hot Springs operates on a simple Rankine cycle with R-134e as the working fluid. For more details, see the suggested reading The cycle operates between pressure limits of 232 psia and approximately 63.6 psia. So that we can actually do this problem by hand, let's estimate that the cycle operates between pressures of approximately opsie and 232 pse. The maximum temperature reached by the cycle is equivalent to the temperature of the geothermal...
