What is the reason for the big difference in melting points for Benzoic Acid and Cholesterol?
if we see the structures of
benzoic acid and cholestrol here is a big difference in the
structures that benzoic acid consists only one benzene ring and
cholestrol has 4 alkyl rings and one alkyl chain due to this big
size difference the melting point of cholestrol is much higher than
benzoic acid.
Second reason is the preaence of OH group in cholestrol due to this it forms intermolecular hydrogen bonding so its melting point is higher.

1. An unknown compound X is one of the four compounds listed in the following table. A mixture of X with benzoic acid melts at 89°C, a mixture of X with phenylsuccinate melts at 20°C, and a mixture of X with m-aminophenol melts at 102°C. What is the identity of X? Explain Chemnical mp. ("C)...
I was conducting an acid-base extraction experiment with the objective of identifying an unknown benzoic acid from a mixture. My group recrystallized the aqueous layer and obtained its melting point to compare with standard compounds. In the end, our melting range for the recrystallized product was 136.0ºC - 142.2ºC which was only similar to the range of the standard 2-chloromethyl benzoic acid (139.4ºC - 143.6ºC) out of all the provided standards. However, when testing the mixed melting point of the...
what is the difference between these melting points?
The melting point of diamond, C. is > 3800 K. The melting point of carbon tetrachloride, CCL4, is 250 K. Explain the difference in melting points between these two substances.
A solution of 1.5 g benzoic acid (C6H5COOH; MW = 122.123 g/mol) in 100.0 g of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4; MW =153.822 g/mol) has a boiling point of 77.50°C. The boiling point of pure carbon tetrachloride is 76.72°C and the melting point is -22.92°C. Calculate the molecular weight of benzoic acid in the solution. Suggest a reason for the difference between the molar mass based on the formula (listed above) and the molar mass determined in part a.

In retrieving the compound (benzoic acid) from the aqueous phase, what is the reason for having precipitation after adding HCl in the aqueous phase? A) Carboxylate salt is less soluble in acid, so it forms precipitate after adding HCl. B) NaCl is formed after adding in HCl, and it is the precipitate. C) Carboxylate salt is neutralized after adding HCl, becomes less soluble in water and precipitates out.
What would be difference between the IRs of p-toluic acid (starting material) and 4- (bromomethyl)benzoic acid (product)? (You don’t need to look up the IR of p-toluic acid, just think about what is changing between the starting material and product). Why is IR not a good way to verify that you made product?
If benzaldehyde has completely oxidized to benzoic acid. What difference would this make to the IR spedrum? Include the frequency rance and assigh any new signals that would appear and the frequency for any signals that would discippear.
Illustrate the preparation of a carboxylic acid by the hydrolysis of a nitrile. Prepare benzoic acid. Purify the compound by recrystallization and determine the melting point as purity criterion.
In melting point experiment, (we use benzoic acid (solid),acetanilide (solid) and we put them in capillary tube and let them heat with thiele tube.) why Raoult's law is related to melting point? I think Raoult's law is only in liquid. please make me understand.. How solids are interact with each other as liquid?
