I know the mathematical definition of the RMS velocity. What I'm looking for is the logical definition. Example: The average velocity of a group of cars can be related to a balancing point for the group. What would the RMS velocity be considered/related to in this example?

Answer #1

suppose there are 10 cars, 5 of which are travelling towards right and 5 towards left, all with same velocity, V. Now since velocity is a vector quantity we have to allot signs. Lets say right as positive, then naturally, left will be negative. so then 5 cars have velocity V and the other 5 have -V. We end up with average velocity as zero. To eliminate this problem we make use of rms velocity which is "the square root of the average of squares of the velocities". Squaring up makes the negative signs to disappear and hence we do not end up with the default result as zero.

Hi, I am doing a project in Mechanics of Materials and have some problems. I'm looking for machines or real-life examples that have both axial force and bending moment. Chairs, tables and canopies were mentioned as examples, but I would like to know more examples other than those. The thing that I have currently found as an example is a cantilever crane. But I'm not sure if this is suitable for my project. What else there would be?

Here I'm really interested in lowering barriers to mathematical education. Target: I'd like to see created for the JavaScript community, an equivalent of the Python-based/linked scientific and high-performance computing libraries (great lists of which are available through Sage and otherwise). And I want that, because I'd like to make it easy for people who learn JavaScript to get into scientific and numerical computing without having to learn Python (& company). (I know it's easy to learn Python, as I basically...
