Question

FIGURE 1.19 One of these objects is speeding up, the other slowing down, but they both have a positive acceleration ay (a) Speeding up to the right (b) Slowing down to the left
2. Consider Figure 1.19 in the textbook. As stated in the figure, the Δ 1 min between snapshots. (Note: you will need to estimate the position values; do this with some care.) a. (15 pts) Choose the correct word (positive, negative, or zero) to describe the direction of the average acceleration vector between (i) the t-2 min and t4 min snapshots (i) the t 5 min and t 7 min snapshots (ii) the t-7 min and t-9 min snapshots. Be sure to explain why each choice is correct. b. (10 pts) Calculate an estimated position for the student at t-10 min, assuming the student continues to walk at constant velocity after the t-9 min snaps work.

Answer #1

a.

i)

average acceleration is given as

average acceleration = (final velocity - initial velocity) /(time interval)

between t = 2 min and t = 4 min , the length of the arrow of final velocity is greater than the length of arrow of initial velocity. hence the average acceleration comes out to be positive. and in the direction of the velocity

ii)

average acceleration is given as

average acceleration = (final velocity - initial velocity) /(time interval)

between t = 5 min and t = 7 min , the length of the arrow of final velocity is smaller than the length of arrow of initial velocity. hence the average acceleration comes out to be negative. the negative sign indicates that the direction of acceleration is opposite to the velocity.

iii)

average acceleration is given as

average acceleration = (final velocity - initial velocity) /(time interval)

between t = 7 min and t = 9 min , the length of the arrow of final velocity is smaller than the length of arrow of initial velocity. hence the average acceleration comes out to be negative. the negative sign indicates that the direction of acceleration is opposite to the velocity.
