Answer #1

A propagation step is a step in which one type of radical is produced from another type of radical.

Generally, in a propagation step, the number of reactiong radicals equal to the number of producing radicals.

The following example is helpful in understanding it.

    a. Draw the first propagation step for a bromide free radical and the double bond of 1-methylcyclohexene. HINT: One electron from the double bond interacts with the bromide free radical to form a new bond. The other electron from the double bond attaches to one of the carbons. Be sure to use three single-headed arrows, and don't forget to draw the two possible free radical products that will form from this step. Circle the most likely product and explain why...

II. Calculate the AH (in keal/mol) for the first step of propagation for the two types of hydrogen atoms in 2- methylpropane using the chlorine radical. Draw the energy diagram (including both possibilities on the same diagram) and indicate whether the first step of propagation is endothermic or exothermic. ALSO calculate the AHn for the formation of the product resulting from the more easily abstractable hydrogen. (Remember: you need to have three AH values calculated and ONE energy diagram). (20...
