1. how does a lack of cultural awareness contribute to poor health care? How will you, in your future health care role, strive to improve cultural awareness in yourself and in your department?
Culture refers to the idea, belief, customs and social behaviour of a particular group of people in the society. Behaviours are different for different groups of people. It gives an identity to the group or the people. It is very important to understand different cultures of different people and try to respect each of it.
Being a health care professional we should be the people who should understand the importance of all these cultural values and the meaning of it in different individuals. It is always important to understand your patient before you treat them. Being unable to understand what is good for him and what is not will always help us to bond with our patient. If we don't try to understand what is important to them and what is not there will always be a barrier and a thin line of rejection by them for us and if we build this haterate it will always be difficult to treat or provide care to the patient.
The solution to improve this cultural awareness in myself and my department will be the first thing I will do as being a staff nurse. First of all we should all be ready to accept people of any cultural group with our heart. We should never see people as different cultural groups but as human being and for us as our patients. When the patient comes with the admission forms we should note what cultural background has been given by them and should make note not to do the things which offends the people of the common cultural backgrounds. We should always be polite enough to ask our patients to always inform us if we are not being fair to them or if we are hurting their feelings in anyway. We should always note their feelings, remarks, their cultural practices etc for few days and later we should help them with it by ourselves as well in order to win their confidence.
